Environmental impact is one of our three pillars when rating brands. Here are the top-rated brands scoring “Great” for their efforts in reducing the impact of their products and business operations, and helping to protect the planet.

Fashion and beauty can devastate the environment. These brands are working to minimise that

This inherent sense of duty to nourish the planet that nourishes us right back has sadly fallen by the wayside in the past few decades, as consumer industries—like fashion and beauty—have prioritised speed, cost, and scale over responsible production, with devastating effects on the environment. The climate crisis is the most pressing environmental issue of our time, and conscious consumers now know some of the solid steps they can take to reduce their impact on the environment; like making the most of what they already have; reducing their consumption; in the case of fashion, buying secondhand; and exploring more sustainable brands when they need to buy new. With that in mind, we rolled up our sleeves and tracked down the fashion and beauty brands doing “Great” for the planet.

For the planet rating, we dig deep into brands’ environmental policies to help you see through the pervasive greenwashing. We consider each brand’s reported resource use and waste management, including the types of fibres they use, the sustainability of their business model, their product durability, their commitment to circularity, and their textile waste practices. We investigate their policies to address energy use and carbon emissions, impacts on water, biodiversity, microfibre pollution, deforestation, and chemical use and disposal.

Read on to discover the top-rated clothing and beauty brands prioritising the planet.
